Weekly Photo Challenge : Father Grinten

Father Henrikus Van der Grinten is a Dutch missionary who worked in Indonesia from 1847 to 1864.

I admire him because he bravely said “Yes” to serve Catholic Church in Indonesia, which at that time still very dangerous with unfriendly climate to him.

Everybody loved him, becaues he was very close to the Catholic people in Batavia (Jakarta). Everyday he visited sick people in hospital, he built an orphanage, taught the children, helped the poor and marginal, and made friend with every people from every religion, nationality, and race.

He traveled to the ancient Kalimantan to spread the good news from God. He went through the thick forest and long river to meet Dayak people in Pontianak, Sanggau, Sekadau, Smitau, Sintang, Melawi, and Putusibau. His duty was very very hard.. But he always did it with happiness because his heart was overwhelmed with love, as written on his tombstone :

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. (1 Cor 9:22).

The above picture is his tombstone in Museum Taman Prasasti Jakarta.
